Brazil to invest $5B in deep water oil finds RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -- Brazil on Monday announced plans to spend at least $5 billion to develop deep water oil finds, building new ships and hiring rigs as soaring world fuel prices boost demand for drilling equipment. State-run oil company Petroleo Brasileiro SA, or Petrobras, will spend $5 billion to build 146 ships and plans to hire 40 deep-water drilling rigs and platforms, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva told shipbuilders in Niteroi, a harbor town near Rio de Janeiro's coast. Analysts said the additional equipment could cost an extra $15 billion
Oil shortage a myth, says industry insider By Steve Connor, Science Editor - Monday, 9 June 2008 There is more than twice as much oil in the ground as major producers say, according to a former industry adviser who claims there is widespread misunderstanding of the way proven reserves are calculated. Although it is widely assumed that the world has reached a point where oil production has peaked and proven reserves have sunk to roughly half of original amounts, this idea is based on flawed thinking, said Richard Pike, a former oil industry man who is now chief executive of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Current estimates suggest there are 1,200 billion barrels of proven global reserves, but the industry's internal figures suggest this amounts to less than half of what actually exists. The misconception has helped boost oil prices to an all-time high, sending jitters through the market and prompting calls for oil-producing nations to increase supply to push down costs. l
Solaria is a privately held solar technology company based in Silicon Valley. Applying our extensive expertise in the optics and semiconductor industries, we develop breakthrough innovations that make solar cell and module production more efficient, thereby providing the cost savings that will ultimately allow solar energy to compete successfully on the world market. Silicon is the immediate future of solar energy, but currently it is both costly and in limited supply. Rather than seeking unproven alternatives, we’ve taken a practical approach to the problem, integrating with the existing PV supply chain to optimize silicon utilization. Our technology thus delivers crucial capacity growth that is low risk, easily scalable and ready for rapid adoption. As the industry progresses, Solaria technology has the flexibility to extend to future applications and products.
